Get us to the ship!

Day 1  Southampton   Monday, September 11, 2017

This photo is actually well into our cruise, as we sailed into Akureyri, Iceland. I did not start taking pictures until we reached Bergen, Norway on Day 3. Since this first blog entry is titled, "Get us to the ship", I needed a picture from our ship.
Speaking of our ship, here is a photo of the Norwegian Jade from a hillside in rainy Ålesund, Norway. It held 2300 guests, and was similar to the Gem, which was our first ship in 2012 to Quebec.

We departed Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon, Sept 10 on Air Canada to Toronto. Then we had a pleasant overnight flight to London Gatwick, where we joined about 10 other Jade passengers for a bus trip to Southampton. We stayed off the motorway, so we got to experience the many roundabouts on their roadways, and see some nice scenery.

When we arrived at the dock in the afternoon, we were among the last to board. It was actually nice not to have any wait lines (which we experienced on our other cruises) as we were "processed" onto the ship. It did not take long to notice that about 2/3 of the passengers were Asian. We later learned that many hundreds were part of a single tour group out of Hong Kong.

Our cabin was on the starboard side of deck 5, at the bow. We had the third cabin from the front, and there's our little porthole in the middle left of the photo. We were low enough that when we had rough seas, we could watch the waves splash right over our porthole! Just next to us and forward was the theater, where we watched the shows each night (but we had to go up to deck 6 to enter; you couldn't see it from our deck).

We sailed off right on time at 5 pm, and watched some scenery from the Spinnaker Lounge on deck 13 at the bow (a quick ride up our nearby elevator). We also wanted to try our first drinks on our beverage package, which was an added perk from Norwegian. With bars and lounges all over the ship, we were never far from a "free" drink if we were in the mood (I know, it wasn't really free).

Due to the time difference and not getting very much sleep on the plane, we were of course tired and wanting to take naps. But we resisted. Our dinner was wonderful, we watched the "sail away" party on the pool deck as they introduced the ship's singers and dancers, and we crashed at about 9 pm!
