Swaying in the North Sea

Day 2   Day at Sea  Tuesday, Sept 12, 2017

That's not actually England we're leaving behind in this picture, but I didn't take any photos until we reached Bergen the next day. Therefore, I stole this photo from Day 5 as we were departing the Shetland Islands. Janet and I were eating our dinner desserts outside the deck 12 buffet.

During our 1st night and during this day sailing north toward Norway, we had significant sea swells. But being on such a huge ship, it didn't seem bad. We wandered the ship a bit, tried out the various entertainers, took naps, and of course ate and drank! We learned right away that we did not enjoy the piano singer, as we had on our previous cruises. Zoe's voice just was fingernails on a chalkboard to us. We did enjoy the stage show, a London singer who did show tunes we mostly knew.

That evening, we happened upon the guitar singer, who turned out to be our and everyone else's favorite throughout the entire cruise. Randon, from the Philippines, connected with his huge, standing-room-only crowds, and encouraged sing-alongs. We knew almost all of his folksy 60s-70s songs. You had to fight for seats; if someone got up to leave, there would be rush to take them. Once, Janet "pushed" her way to two suddenly available chairs, letting everyone else know as she approached that they were HERS. lol  We'll never forget the one Asian woman who encouraged (and would dance near him) Neal Diamond songs; Sweet Caroline got to be his final song each night with everyone singing along loudly - "so good, so good, so good!", and the nearby bar tenders banging their pans at the right times.

It was nice to have a day at sea to get acclimated to the five-hour time difference from home. Janet's nap was too long, however, and it messed up her night's sleep a bit. The weather was too cool to be outside, as we had done on previous cruises during days at sea. But the huge Spinnaker Lounge at the bow was a great spot to relax, read, and gaze at the North Sea.
